Quick Answer
A clogged tub or bathtub drain is almost always hair locked into soap scum and body oil — in the trap or first few feet of the branch line. Chemical drain cleaners rarely clear it and damage your pipes and stopper hardware. Pull the stopper, clear the visible hair plug, and if the tub drain still runs slow, the clog is deeper and needs mechanical tub drain cleaning. If the tub backs up when you flush the toilet or run the washer, the problem isn't the tub — it's the main line.

Of every "clogged drain" call we run in Greater Boston, the clogged tub is the one homeowners try hardest to fix themselves first — and the one where the wrong fix causes the most pipe damage. Here's what actually works for a bathtub drain clog, and what to skip.
What's actually clogging your tub drain
Nine times out of ten, a clogged tub drain is hair. Long, short, doesn't matter — hair catches on the stopper crossbar or the first turn of the trap, soap scum and conditioner bond to it, body oil glues the whole mat together, and the drain slows. You don't notice until the tub takes a minute to empty. A few weeks later it's standing water at your ankles.
In older homes — and Greater Boston has a lot of older homes — the branch line between the tub trap and the stack can also be partially scaled with mineral and rust. That makes everytub drain slow on top of the hair clog, so even after you clear the visible hair, the tub still runs slow.
What to try yourself (5 minutes)
- Pull the stopper. Pop-up and lift-and-turn stoppers unscrew or lift out. Behind it you'll usually find a fist-sized hair plug wrapped around the crossbar. Pull it. That alone fixes a lot of tub drain clogs.
- Run hot water for 30 seconds. If the tub now drains full-bore, you're done. Replace the stopper and call it a day.
- If it's still slow, stop. The clog is deeper than the stopper — it's in the trap or the branch line, and you need a drain machine to reach it.
What to skip (seriously)
Chemical drain openers. Caustic and acid drain cleaners are sold as a fix for bathtub drain clogs. They aren't. They sit on top of the hair mat — which is hydrophobic and oil-bound — and don't dissolve it. What they do do is eat the chrome plating on your stopper hardware, attack old galvanized branch lines, and create a dangerous situation for the tech who eventually has to open the trap with caustic residue still in it.
We don't use them on any of our jobs. You shouldn't either.

What proper tub drain cleaning looks like
A proper tub drain cleaning on a truly clogged bathtub:
- Pull the stopper hardware and the overflow plate.
- Run a properly sized cable through the overflow into the trap and out into the branch line — usually 15–25 feet.
- Scrape the pipe wall on the way back out (not just on the way in).
- Fill the tub a few inches and let it drain — confirm it empties full-bore, not just "better than it was."
- Re-seat the stopper and overflow plate, test the seal.
That's the whole job for a typical clogged tub. In Greater Boston it's a $150–$275 flat-rate visit, done in under an hour, no chemicals.
When a clogged tub means something bigger
Here's the part most homeowners miss: if your tub backs up when you flush the toilet, run the washer, or use any other fixture, the problem isn't the tub at all. The clog is in the main sewer line, and the tub — as the lowest opening in your drain system — is just showing the symptom.
Same goes for multiple slow drains throughout the house, gurgling when fixtures empty, or a sewer smell coming up through the tub when you haven't used it. Those are main sewer line clog symptoms, and they need main line jetting or cabling, not tub drain cleaning.
Bottom line
For a normal clogged tub or bathtub drain: pull the stopper, clear the hair, skip the chemicals. If it's still slow after that, call a drain company for proper mechanical tub drain cleaning. If the tub is backing up with other fixtures, you're looking at a main line issue — different problem, different fix.
