What is a sewer scope inspection?

A sewer scope is a video inspection of the main sewer line that runs from your house to the street or septic tank. A waterproof HD camera on a flexible rod is fed through the line so you can see the inside of the pipe — cracks, root intrusion, bellies (sags), pipe material, and any blockages.

Why isn't a sewer scope part of a standard home inspection?

Standard home inspectors aren't trained or equipped for it and don't carry the equipment. The general inspector tests fixtures and visible plumbing, but the buried sewer line — often the most expensive thing to repair in a house — is invisible to them. That's why a separate sewer scope is recommended on any home older than 25 years or with mature trees near the line.
