Quick Answer
A clogged shower drain is almost always hair locked into soap scum and body oil — in the strainer, the trap, or the first few feet of the branch line. Pull the strainer, clear the visible hair, and run hot water for 30 seconds. If the shower still drains slow, the clog is deeper and needs mechanical shower drain cleaning. Skip chemical drain openers — they damage the strainer hardware and old galvanized branches and don't actually clear hair. If the shower backs up when you flush the toilet, that's a main sewer line problem, not a shower drain problem.

A clogged shower drain is the most common drain-cleaning call we run. It's also the one homeowners try hardest to fix themselves first — and the one where the wrong fix does the most pipe damage. Here's the right way to unclog a shower drain, what to skip, and when to stop and call.
What's actually clogging your shower drain
Nine times out of ten: hair. Long, short, doesn't matter — it catches on the strainer or the first turn of the trap, soap scum and conditioner bond to it, body oil glues the whole mat together, and the drain slows. You notice it as a puddle around your feet. A few weeks later it's a full clog.
In older Greater Boston homes, the cast iron branch line between the shower trap and the stack can also be partially scaled. That makes every shower drain slow on top of the hair clog, so even after you clear the visible hair, the shower still runs slow.
How to unclog a shower drain (5 minutes)
- Pull the strainer or stopper. Most modern strainers unscrew or lift off. Behind it you'll usually find a fist-sized hair plug. Pull it.
- Reach in with bent needle-nose pliers or a plastic drain stick. Anything else hair has caught on past the strainer, pull out. Toss it. (You don't want to see it.)
- Run hot water for 30 seconds. If the shower now drains full-bore, you're done. Replace the strainer.
- If it's still slow, stop. The clog is deeper than the strainer — it's in the trap or the branch line, and a hand snake won't reach it cleanly.
What to skip (seriously)
Chemical drain openers. Caustic and acid drain cleaners are sold as a fix for clogged shower drains. They aren't. They sit on top of the hair mat — which is hydrophobic and oil-bound — and don't dissolve it. What they do do is eat the chrome on your strainer, attack old galvanized branch lines, and create a dangerous situation for the tech who eventually has to open the trap with caustic residue still in it.
We don't use them on any of our jobs. You shouldn't either.

What proper shower drain cleaning looks like
A proper shower drain cleaning on a truly clogged shower:
- Pull the strainer and any pop-up hardware.
- Run a properly sized cable through the trap and out into the branch line — usually 15–25 feet.
- Scrape the pipe wall on the way back out, not just on the way in.
- Run the shower for a minute and confirm full-bore flow — not just "better than it was."
- Re-seat the strainer, test the seal.
That's the whole job for a typical clogged shower drain. In Greater Boston it's a $150–$275 flat-rate visit, done in under an hour, no chemicals.
When a clogged shower means something bigger
Here's the part most homeowners miss: if your shower backs up when you flush the toilet, run the washer, or use any other fixture, the problem isn't the shower at all. The clog is in the main sewer line, and the shower — as one of the lowest openings in your drain system — is just showing the symptom.
Same goes for multiple slow drains throughout the house, gurgling when fixtures empty, or a sewer smell coming up through the shower when you haven't used it. Those are main sewer line clog symptoms, and they need main line jetting or cabling, not shower drain cleaning.
Bottom line
For a normal clogged shower drain: pull the strainer, clear the hair, skip the chemicals. If it's still slow after that, call a drain company for proper mechanical shower drain cleaning. If the shower is backing up with other fixtures, you're looking at a main line issue — different problem, different fix.
